9.00am - 3.00pm Master-Class A: How to Implement Best Practice GIS into your Utilities Operation

Overview:

In this masterclass, you will develop business-based GIS strategies to derive the maximum benefit from using integrated GIS technology. Not only will you be better able to influence and make strategic decisions to invest in and implement a GIS, this workshop will enable you to leverage your existing GIS investments for greater efficiency and productivity.

This masterclass aims to provide you with strategies to derive an improved return from your GIS by learning how to develop effective strategies and drive the business evaluation, selection, development and implementation processes.

Highlights of this masterclass will include:

  • Applying an effective strategy development methodology (based on the business, data, organisational and technology considerations of an organisation) to derive best practice outcomes.
  • Realistically determining and documenting costs and benefits, i.e. can your stated ROI stand up to the rigors of external audit?
  • The absolute basics of system evaluation, selection, engagement, design, development and implementation.

About your executive tutor:

Carole Lowe is a GIS Specialist with over 25 years experience in project managing GIS, developing strategies and technical specifications, conducting technology reviews, undertaking needs analysis, as well as strong project management experience for a wide range of Government agencies, Utilities and Councils. Carole runs the GIS Best Practice survey each year. The key objective of the survey is to determine the level of best practice for the use of GIS/Spatial and related technologies across a broad range of implementation considerations, so that industry practitioners can better manage spatial information technology to meet their specific business needs.


3.30pm - 6.30pm Workshop B: Asset Management 101

Overview:

Utilities are increasingly using business processes, for repairs and construction, or asset management and network extension planning. However, implementing these processes efficiently often requires access to information from different sources, departments and systems.

This workshop will provide you with strategies for planning and managing your maintenance operation and enable you to implement asset management techniques to ensure continuous operational improvement.

Highlights and strategies gained from this workshop will include:

  • Analysing the life cycle processes: Understand the challenge of applying asset management principles
  • Understanding the impact of asset management planning on life cycle costs
  • Ensuring that design for reliability, availability, and maintainability principles are applied
  • Executing performance management for continuous improvement
  • Identifying KPI’s relevant to your organisation and its business goals
  • Risk based maintenance methodologies and tools to develop and improve maintenance plans
  • Analysing where your organisation sits: A self assessment tool

This workshop will suit those in the area of asset management or with leadership responsibilities for reliable performance of assets and those who are looking to improve their planning and management skills.

About your executive tutor:

Deryk Anderson has over 24 years experience in the management of industrial assets as a practitioner, manager and consultant in utilities and a variety of other industries. Deryk is a mechanical engineer by profession and commenced his career in Mining and Power Generation in the electricity industry. He has worked as a consultant for over sixty organisations improving their asset and maintenance management functions. Deryk currently works as an operations consultant, trainer and mentor to Australian and overseas organisations and is a part-time lecturer in the Engineering Maintenance Management program at Central Queensland University.
